AC/DC 1979, hand-drawn portrait of the band in 1979 on the release of their 6th album “Highway To Hell”, (L to R) with Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar, age 26), Cliff Williams (bass, age 30), Phil Rudd (drums, age 25), Angus Young (lead guitar, age 24) and Bon Scott (lead vocals, age 33).
Highway To Hell became AC/DC’s first LP to break the top 100 of the US Billboard 200 chart, eventually reaching number 17, and it propelled the band into the top ranks of hard rock acts.
AC/DC are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney, in 1973 by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Malcolm and Angus Young developed the idea for the band’s name after their sister, Margaret Young, saw the initials “AC/DC” on a sewing machine. “AC/DC” is an abbreviation meaning “alternating current/direct current” electricity. The brothers felt that this name symbolised the band’s raw energy, power-driven performances of their music.
Angus Young’s stage outfit was also created by his sister Margaret, who made his first uniform, but he wore it so much, it got torn up. To replace it, he used his own school uniform from his Ashfield High School.
AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. Membership subsequently stabilised around the Young brothers, singer Bon Scott, drummer Phil Rudd, and bass player Mark Evans.
Evans was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977 for the album Powerage. In February 1980, a few months after recording the album Highway to Hell, lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died of acute alcohol poisoning.
The group considered disbanding but stayed together, bringing in Brian Johnson as replacement for Scott. Later that year, the band released their first album with Johnson, Back in Black, which they dedicated to Scott’s memory.
The album launched them to new heights of success and became one of the best selling albums of all time.
The band’s greatest hits: “Back In Black”, “Thunderstruck”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “Whole Lotta Rosie”, “Ride On”, “Highway To Hell”, “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)”, “Hells Bells”, “Shoot To Thrill”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”, “Rock ‘N’ Roll Train” and “Who Made Who”.
Malcolm Young left AC/DC in April 2014, to receive treatment for dementia.
In September 2014, the band’s management announced that he would be retiring permanently. He died from the disease on November 18, 2017 at age 64.
Brian Johnson, with his love of auto racing and having forgotten to put in ear plugs during one race, ruptured his left ear drum.
On April 19, 2016, Johnson made an official statement regarding his health problems and inability to tour, due to his accelerated hearing loss.
His last show with AC/DC was on February 28, 2016; at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
AC/DC have sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 71.5 million albums in the United States, making them the tenth highest-selling artist in the United States and the 14th best selling artist worldwide.
In 2003, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
To date, the future of the band is still undetermined.
