Crosby, Stills & Nash 1969, hand-drawn on the back stoop of Gary Burden’s house, the first frame outake from their first album photo shoot with Henry Diltz.
The session was on February 13, 1969 with David Crosby age 27, Stephen Stills age 24 and Graham Nash age 26.
For the trio’s first album cover, art director Gary Burden (who became famous designing various album covers) was hired along with his partner Henry Diltz, a photographer for the project.
The day started at Burden’s house where several shots were taken out back.
Then they left for an abandoned “cottage” that Burden had noticed on 815 Palm Avenue in West Hollywood, California.
The cottage had an old chair and couch at the front of the house. So Diltz took several photos of the trio on the couch.
That night the three musicians finally decided on a name for their group: Crosby, Still & Nash.
Diltz then realized that the shots that were taken on the couch had the band sitting in the wrong order from left to right (Nash, Stills & Crosby).
So they decided to go back the next day and retake the photos with the band sitting in the correct order.
The next morning they arrived only to find that the house had been bulldozed and demolished. So they went with the best shot from the previous day’s shoot.
On the back of the album cover, you can see Dallas Taylor (the band’s drummer) peeking through the front door.
The 815 Palm Avenue location today is a small parking lot.
David Crosby passed away on January 18, 2023 at age 81.
