David Byrne Caricature, shown here in NYC, age 30 in 1982.
Byrne is a Scottish-American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, artist, writer, actor, and filmmaker. He was a founding member, principal songwriter, and lead singer and guitarist of the American new wave band The Talking Heads (1975–1991).
Byrne has released solo recordings and worked with various media including film, photography, opera, fiction, and non-fiction. He has received Academy Award, Grammy, and Golden Globe awards, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
Born in Scotland, Byrne’s parents moved to Hamilton, Ontario when he was two years old. At age 8, his family moved to Maryland. Before high school, Byrne already knew how to play the guitar, accordion, and violin.
The Talking Heads, formed in 1975, comprised of David Byrne (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Frantz (drums), Tina Weymouth (bass), and Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar).
These former art school students who were involved in the 1970s New York punk scene, released their debut album, Talking Heads: 77, to positive reviews in 1977.
The group helped to pioneer new wave music by integrating elements of punk, art rock, funk, and world music with avant-garde sensibilities and an anxious, clean-cut image.
The group produced 8 studio albums that produced hits such as: “Burning Down The House”, “Once In A Lifetime”, “Life During Wartime”, “Psycho Killer”, “Take Me To The River”, “Girlfriend Is Better”, “And She Was”, “Love, Building On Fire”, “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” and “Road To Nowhere”.
After the breakup of the band in 1991, Byrne has pursued a solo career.
