Garcia’s 1943 Martin D-28 has an Adirondack spruce top with pre-war herringbone purfling, Brazilian rosewood back and sides and was likely acquired by the guitarist in the late spring of 1970, before his group’s famous trans-Canada train trip with The Band, Janis Joplin and Delaney & Bonnie, immortalized in the film “Festival Express”.
It also turned up during the Dead’s acoustic sets that summer and fall, and it was likely Garcia’s acoustic on the Dead’s landmark “American Beauty”.

Garcia was an American musician known for being the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s.

Garcia was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994. He declined to attend the ceremony; the band jokingly brought a cardboard cutout of Garcia out on stage in his absence.

He died of a heart attack in August 1995, at age 53.
