Jerry Garcia 1978 Portrait, illustrated here at the Pyramid Of Djoser in Saqarah, Egypt, 1978 age 36.

Garcia was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for being a principal songwriter, the lead guitarist and a vocalist with the rock band the Grateful Dead, of which he was a founding member.

In 1978, The Grateful Dead were in Egypt, playing three concerts before a thousand people a night at the Sound & Light Theatre in Giza, at the foot of the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx.
It was unquestionably a novel notion when the Grateful Dead sought diplomatic talks between the U.S. Government and Egyptian officials to permit the band to bring their acid trip to Cairo.
The result was Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978; a live album of the event. The album was recorded on September 15th & 16th, 1978. The band used The Who’s PA system and the 24 track mobile studio recording truck.

The final night’s performance concurred with a total lunar eclipse.

On a side note, Garcia in 1970, began learning how to play the pedal steel guitar. Still a novice, he wrote and played the pedal steel guitar part on the enduring hit “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young.

Later in life, Garcia struggled with diabetes and in 1986 went into a diabetic coma that nearly cost him his life.
Although his overall health improved somewhat after that, he continued to struggle with obesity, smoking, and longstanding heroin and cocaine addictions.

He was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack on August 9, 1995, at the age of 53.
