Jerry Garcia Poster

Jerry Garcia Poster, hand-drawn posing with his “Wolf 2” guitar at the Grateful Dead’s Front Street headquarters in San Rafael, California, age 35.

Jerome John Garcia was an American musician best known for being the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s.

The Grateful Dead, ranging from quintet to septet, is known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, psychedelia, experimental music, modal jazz, country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, and space rock, for live performances of lengthy instrumental jams, and for their devoted fan base, known as “Deadheads”.

Luthier Doug Irwin customized this legendary guitar for Garcia, known as “The Wolf”. It was made from purpleheart and curly maple with an ebony fingerboard and twenty-four frets. A bloodthirsty cartoon wolf sticker Jerry placed below the tailpiece served to name the guitar and was later inlaid in the body by Irwin.

After years of struggling with longstanding heroin and cocaine addictions, Garcia was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 9, 1995 at the age of 53.

Jerry Garcia’s famous Wolf guitar sold at auction for over $1.9 million Wednesday, May 31st 2017.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead.
