Jimmy Buffett 1978 Portrait

Jimmy Buffett 1978 Portrait, illustrated here at the Calaveras County Fair June 10, 1978 in Angels Camp, California age 31.

Buffett is an American singer-songwriter, musician, author, actor, and businessman. He is best known for his music, which often portrays an “island escapism” lifestyle. Together with his Coral Reefer Band, Buffett has recorded hit songs including “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday”. He has a devoted base of fans known as “Parrotheads”.

Buffett appeared at the Calaveras County Fair concert along with Jackson Browne and Warren Zevon.

His setlist: “Too Late”, “Mañana”, “Pencil Thin Mustache”, “Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants”, “Volcano”, “Come Monday”, “Why Don’t We Get Drunk”, “Fins” and “Margaritaville”.

The first Calaveras County Fair took place in Copperopolis in 1893 making it one of the longest continually running fairs in all of California. However, it wasn’t until the early 1930’s that the International Frog Jumping Jubilee merged with the Calaveras County Fair.
During the California Gold Rush, miners would bet on frog jumping. Mark Twain who prospected out in Angels Camp, witnessed the Frog Jumping Contests. So he penned a short story.
His story, first published in book format in 1867, later became known as The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. This tale from the Gold Rush launched Twain’s career not only across America, but all around the world, putting Mark Twain and little old Angels Camp and Calaveras County on the international map.
