John Prine 1993

John Prine 1993, hand-drawn with his 1946 Gibson Super 400 Arch-Top acoustic guitar, in 1993 age 47.

Prine was an American country folk singer-songwriter. He was active as a composer, recording artist, and live performer since the early 1970s, and known for an often humorous style of country music that has elements of protest and social commentary.
Born and raised in Maywood, Illinois, Prine learned to play the guitar at the age of 14. He moved to Chicago in the late 1960s, where he worked as a mailman, writing and singing songs as a hobby. Becoming a part of the city’s folk revival, he was discovered by Kris Kristofferson, resulting in the production of Prine’s self-titled debut album with Atlantic Records in 1971.

Over the course of his career, Prine recorded such hits as, “Angel From Montgomery”, “Souvenirs”, “Illegal Smile”, “Sam Stone”, “Paradise”, “Grampa Was A Carpenter”, “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” and a host of others.

Prine, called the “Mark Twain Of American Songwriting” is widely regarded as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation; he influenced Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris.

In Bonnie Raitt’s words: “John Prine is a National Treasure”.

In early 1998, Prine was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer on the right side of his neck. He had major surgery to remove a substantial amount of diseased tissue. The surgery altered his vocals, and added a gravelly tone to his voice.
In November, 2013 Prine underwent surgery for lung cancer and recovered from it.

Prine died on April 7, 2020, of complications caused by COVID-19 at the age of 73.
