Neil Young 1971 Portrait

Neil Young 1971 Portrait, illustrated here at his Broken Arrow Ranch, Woodside, California, in the fall of 1971, age 26, while recording his 4th album “Harvest”.

Young is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, musician, and activist. After embarking on a music career in the 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles, co-founding Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Jim Messina. After their breakup, he joined Crosby, Stills and Nash in 1969.
Since his early solo albums and those with his backing band Crazy Horse, Young has been prolific, recording a steady stream of studio and live albums.

After his success with CSNY, Young purchased a ranch in the rural hills above Woodside and Redwood City in Northern California.
He wrote the song “Old Man” in honor of the land’s longtime caretaker, Louis Avila. He recorded his break-through album “Harvest” in late 1971.

On “Harvest”, the acoustic-based songs were recorded in Nashville (“Old Man”, “Heart Of Gold” – with James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt on background vocals); the electric-based songs (“Are You Ready for the Country”, “Alabama”, and “Words”) were recorded in a barn at his ranch in California in late September.
The other songs on the album were recorded live.

Mixing was done both at Quadrafonic and at Young’s house. During playback at the ranch, producer Elliot Mazer ran the left channel into the PA speakers still in the barn and the right channel into speakers in the house.
Young sat outside in a rowboat on his lake with Crosby and Nash sitting beside him listening to the mix. When asked about the stereo balance, he called out, “More barn”.
