Richard Ashcroft Caricature, illustrated here from th January 9, 1997 photo shoot by Chris Floyd for The Verve album, Urban Hymns, age 26.
Ashcroft is an English singer and songwriter. He was the lead singer and occasional rhythm guitarist of the alternative rock band the Verve from their formation in 1990 until their original split in 1999.
Ashcroft attended Upholland High School in West Lancashire, near Manchester, along with future bandmates Simon Jones, Peter Salisbury and Simon Tong, and then attended nearby Winstanley College, where he met Nick McCabe. His teachers referred to him as “the cancer of the class”.
He formed The Verve (originally just Verve) in 1990 with McCabe, Jones, and Salisbury.
The band’s commercial breakthrough was the 1997 album “Urban Hymns”, one of the best-selling albums in UK Chart history. The album features the hit singles “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, “The Drugs Don’t Work” and “Lucky Man”.
Soon after their commercial peak, the Verve disbanded in April 1999, citing internal conflicts.
The band’s original line-up reunited in June 2007, embarking on a tour later that year and releasing the album Forth in August 2008, which spawned the hit single “Love Is Noise”. Amid revived tensions, the band broke up for the third time in 2008 following their final performance together at the V Festival.
Since then Ashcroft has pursued a solo career. Chris Martin of Coldplay has described Ashcroft as “the best singer in the world”.
Ashcroft is married to Kate Radley, a former member of Spiritualized. They married in 1995 and it was years before it was publicly revealed that the pair had married. Together, they have two sons: Sonny, born in 2000, and Cassius, born in 2004. The family lives in Taynton in Gloucestershire.
