Steve Clark Portrait, illustrated here at the Monsters Of Rock Festival in Donington Park, Leicestershire, England August 16, 1986, with his white Les Paul Custom, age 26.
Stephen Clark was an English musician. He was the principal songwriter and lead guitarist for the English hard rock band Def Leppard.
He joined Def Leppard in January 1978 and contributed to over 90% of the band’s music. Clark and Pete Willis shared lead-guitar duties, and Clark was nicknamed “The Riffmaster” due to his talent and ability to come up with guitar riffs.
After Pete Willis left the band, Phil Collen was hired as his replacement. Collen and Clark became close friends, leading to their signature dual-guitar sound.
Clark and Collen became known as the “Terror Twins” in recognition of their close friendship and alcohol-fuelled antics off-stage.
Part of their success as a duo was attributed to their ability to swap between rhythm and lead guitar, often both playing lead or both doing rhythm within the same song.
Collen was self-taught, while Clark was a classically-trained musician.
Clark suffered from alcoholism and on January 8, 1991 he was found dead on his couch at home by his girlfriend.
The postmortem revealed that the cause of death was respiratory failure caused by a lethal mixture of alcohol and prescription drugs.
At the time of his death, Clark had a blood alcohol level of .30 and morphine in his system.
He was 30 years old.
In 2019, Clark was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Def Leppard.
