Three Dog Night Caricature, illustrated here in November, 1970 with Corey Wells age 29, Danny Hutton age 27 and Chuck Negron age 28.
Three Dog Night is an American rock band formed in 1967, with founding members consisting of vocalists Cory Wells, Danny Hutton, and Chuck Negron.
This lineup was soon augmented by Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards), Joe Schermie (bass), Michael Allsup (guitar), and Floyd Sneed (drums).
Three Dog Night recorded many songs written by outside songwriters, and they helped to introduce mainstream audiences to writers such as Paul Williams (“An Old Fashioned Love Song”) and Hoyt Axton (“Joy to the World”).
Danny Hutton’s girlfriend suggested the band name after reading a magazine article about Aboriginal Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a “three dog night”
They initially went by the name of Redwood and made some recordings with Brian Wilson while the Beach Boys were working on the album Wild Honey.
Three Dog Night made its official debut in 1968 at the Whisky a Go Go, at a 5 p.m. press party hosted by Dunhill Records. They were still in the process of making their first album Three Dog Night when they heard the favorable reactions from the hypercritical audience.
Greatest hits” “An Old Fashioned Love Song”, “Black and White”, “Celebrate”, “Easy to Be Hard”, “Eli’s Coming”, “Joy to the World”, “Liar”, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)”, “Never Been to Spain”, “One”, “One Man Band”, “Out in the Country”, “Shambala”, “The Family of Man” and “Try a Little Tenderness”.
Three Dog Night disbanded in 1976.
Wells died in his sleep on October 20, 2015, at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, New York at the age of 74. His family later confirmed he was fighting multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.
Negron struggled with drug abuse and heroin for over 20 years, which lead to several arrests. He overcame his addiction in 1991.
Hutton continues to lead Three Dog Night along with Michael Allsup and the band, touring regularly throughout the US and Canada.
