Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an American politician who served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945.
The longest serving U.S. president, he is the only president to have served more than two terms.
His initial two terms were centered on combating the Great Depression, while his third and fourth saw him shift his focus to America’s involvement in World War II.

FDR’s career was derailed by an illness. It began while the Roosevelts were vacationing at Campobello Island in August 1921.
His main symptoms were fever; symmetric, ascending paralysis; facial paralysis; bowel and bladder dysfunction; numbness and hyperesthesia; and a descending pattern of recovery.
Roosevelt was left permanently paralyzed from the waist down and was diagnosed with polio. This was never revealed to the public until after his death.

In the afternoon of April 12, 1945, in Warm Springs, Georgia, while sitting for a portrait by Elizabeth Shoumatoff, Roosevelt said: “I have a terrific headache.”
He then slumped forward in his chair, unconscious, and was carried into his bedroom. The president’s attending cardiologist, Howard Bruenn, diagnosed a massive intracerebral hemorrhage.
At 3:35 p.m., Roosevelt died at the age of 63.
